Sam & His Beautiful Young Human!
Sam was one of 12 Rottweilers that Happy Tails rescued a few years ago. The Canadian breeder was dying of Ovarian cancer and wanted her animals going to rescue. Happy Tails was the only rescue to step forward. It was a real eye opener. The Candian breeder had been in business for 35 years and kept her animals 24/7 in crates. All of the animals were skin and bones, scared to death of humans and covered in feces and urine.
The winter rescue took several trips and help from friends and our local animal control. Toni, Michelle and Mike did the winter driving (snowing) with windows open wide to help relieve the stench. Tom, our ACO drove over a 150 miles to pick up some dog kennels for us, in the snow...and Dwight was putting together extra runs. After my very long drive on the last run, we both worked outside, in the snow until midnight getting the runs ready.
One poor breeding female died just 6 days after we got her. They had wrung every puppy out of her and were going to shoot her, at least she died nestled in straw and with a fully tummy.
The good news is that all of the Canadian Rotts were adopted except Max, who is still with us. He's a good boy, but TERRIFIED of anything new, won't venture further than 20 feet or so outside of his run.
Sam was scared too, it took him two times before he had enough confidence to go home with his new family. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words! Another day in the life of Happy Tails Rescue!

Excerpted from Canidae Pet Food Blog Several months ago Ceili, a 14 year-old Lab mix, was facing an uncertain future as her human family of Gayle and Danny were struggling to afford the food to keep her fed. But then they heard about The Pongo Fund Pet Food Bank.
On their first visit they received an abundance of Canidae Platinum premium quality dog food for Ceili. As Gayle said, we saved Ceili's life.
A few short months later Ceili returned the lifesaving favor, as she saved Danny's life when he suffered a massive heart attack. Because of her heroic actions, Ceili has been named a finalist for The Humane Society of the United States Dogs of Valor Award.
The Dogs of Valor Awards were created to celebrate the human-animal bond by honoring dogs who have exhibited an extraordinary sense of courage or resolve by heroically helping a person in need.
This is a significant award, and its description fits Ceili perfectly. She is one special dog, and Danny is alive today because of her heroism. The Pongo Fund saved Ceili, Ceili saved Danny. A perfect example of paying it forward!

Toxic sewage sludge used to be dumped into the oceans, killing fish and marine life. After public pressure put an end to ocean-dumping, toxic sludge began to be spread on farmland, touted as natural "fertilizer." In 1998 the sludge industry tried to get the USDA to allow toxic sewage sludge to be used as a fertilizer on organic farms, but the OCA's Save Organic Standards campaign and an aroused organic community stopped this insidious effort.
Today millions of pounds of sludge are dumped on Monsanto's crops, including cotton, corn, and soy grown for animal feed and fuel. This toxic sludge is, by law, allowed to contain dangerous levels of pathogens, viruses and bacteria. The sludge pathogens that survive sewage "treatment" are the hardiest superbugs, bacteria that have developed a resistance to antimicrobials and antibiotics.
Toxic sludge used on food crops must be processed to reduce pathogen contamination, but is still rife with heavy metals and all manner of industrial chemicals from flame retardants to metal plating compounds. Do you want to eat food grown with this? What about your dogs?
Tell Kraft You're Joining the Boycott of their Genetically Modified Foods!
In a recent e-mail to an OCA activist, Kraft Foods admitted it uses genetically engineered bovine growth hormone, saying, "We are not rejecting milk from BGH/BST supplemented herds."
BGH/BST is the genetically modified Bovine Growth Hormone developed by Monsanto and now marketed by Eli Lilly. It was the first genetically modified organism to become part of the food supply.
It is well-known by federal regulators that GMO bovine growth hormone produces milk that is less nutritious, is contaminated with pus, and has elevated levels of IGF-1. Elevated levels of IGF-1 are correlated with increased rates of cancer.
Producers of GMO foods would prefer that their customers didn't know anything about genetically modified organisms and most people, about three quarters of US consumers, have no idea that their food has been genetically modified
On February 17, at a news conference hosted by Oakland (California) Animal Services, IDA Founder Elliot M. Katz, DVM presented our Guardian Award to Vince Faltis, who documented a neighbor's animal cruelty. Video that Mr. Faltis filmed of his neighbor Charles Black striking the dog Blueberry resulted in a four-year sentence for felony animal cruelty. "This case could not have been made without the efforts and heroism of Vince Faltis," said Megan Webb, shelter director. "Charles Black is a dangerous man with a
criminal record. It took a lot of courage to do what Vince did." Click here to read more!
These dogs are left to languish on a chain in extreme weather conditions. They are often abused, neglected and forgotten. This inflicts both physiological and psychological damage on these isolated dogs. Such treatment leads to unsocialized animals that can become territorial and violent. Tragically, children can become the victim of the dogs' resulting anti-social behavior.
From October 2003 through November 2010, there were at least 328 children killed or seriously injured by chained dogs across the country. View full bill here: HB2387
The winter of 2010-2011 is shaping up to be very bad for America's last wild bison. As of early February the National Park Service has captured and is holding approximately 400 bison in the Stephens Creek trap inside Yellowstone National Park. It is time that the National Park Service stand up to Montana's private ranching interests and protect, rather than slaughter, the Yellowstone bison. When they disappear this time, how will they ever be replaced?
Montana Rep. Denny Rehberg has introduced legislation that would strip federal protections for gray wolves across the country. Together, these bills would allow states to eliminate all wolves in the Northern Rockies, Great Lakes and Southwest, including the 50 Mexican wolves struggling for survival in New Mexico and Arizona.
If passed, this legislation would be the first to exempt a single species from the Endangered Species Act, setting a dangerous precedent for removing protections for other imperiled wildlife. I understand the reasoning behind this. It's to protect cattlemen and sheep ranchers. However, they have already established predator control methods that are effective and do not kill the wolf.
Do we really want America to kill everything that may cause harm?
IDA has long campaigned against the cruel treatment of baby elephants in circuses: from the traumatic separations of mothers and babies for brutal training to the endless travel, chaining and forced tricks that damage their still developing bodies. IDA is again fighting for these innocent baby elephant Barack, Ringling Bros. Circuscalves, this time by filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of
Agriculture regarding the calf Barack, who has been forced to perform with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and who is now diagnosed for a second time with a virus that is deadly to elephants.
Barack was born on January 19, 2009 and was forced into travel and performance before he was a year old. Early video shows him in the circus ring surrounded by bullhook-wielding handlers. After only a month of such stressful performing, Barack tested positive for the elephant herpes virus in January of 2010, and was taken back to Ringling's breeding center for treatment. Barack returned to the show in July - and 7 months later suffered a recurrence of the virus that strikes mainly young Asian elephants and has a 85% mortality rate.
